This
weekend I spent some time with Jaide Fox asking her questions, begging
to
take Raphael of SEDUCED BY DARKNESS from
his previous owner (because she wasn’t treating him right), and
begging her to get to work on all the series she has out and that are
upcoming. If you look at Jaide’s web site and read her posts
on New Concepts Publishing’s new Yahoo! Group, you can tell right
away that Jaide has a great sense of humor. She loves fantasy and science
fiction and writes new worlds with such a seasoned hand that I was
shocked to discover that she is relatively new to writing. I wanted
to know more about Jaide Fox and what makes her tick. I hope you enjoy
what I have found out about her . . . I’m off to go play with
my new boy toy! :o)
Tell us about your background, where you’re from, where you went
to school?
I don’t know, do people REALLY want to know this much about me?
It might scare them. I could be their next door neighbor. LOL. No,
I grew up all over, but I’m a Southerner by birth, Georgian by
the grace of God. After bumping around from one school to another,
I finally managed to stay put and graduate from a little north Florida
school.
When did you start writing, did you start with erotic fiction? What
brought you to write erotic fiction?
I never did much writing in school, certainly no more than was required
of me in my AP classes. After I graduated, I tried writing a sci-fi
book, but I never got into it. The first book I managed to finish was
an erotic romance. Mom must’ve done something wrong when I was
growing up.... I’ve always been a little pervert, I reckon. I
started with erotic because I just don’t get a piece of man on
my own and I had to have SOME way to vent all those sexual frustrations.
=)
Can you/would you tell us a bit more about your self personally? Do
you live near your mom and sister? Do you have any one around to help
kill all those nasty bugs that sneak into your house? Any pets?
I live right next door to them! And no, no one helps me kill spiders.
=( I have to shriek, run around crazy trying to find the broom (I’m
a terrible housekeeper/slob), and kill them myself. I do have one cat
that I like to torment on occasion. Especially by throwing wadded up
paper balls at her butt. This valuable exercise (along with hating
to walk to the garbage can) has made me a very good shot. I scare her
every time. Now when she hears the crinkle of paper, her eyes go wild.
LOL. Did I mention I’ve been accused of being a sadist?
Do you have someone to help you research the “scenes” with?
You mean the FUN scenes? No, unfortunately not. I just have to rely
on memory, more’s the pity. With action and dialogue, I often
play around with my mom or sister for ideas and accuracy.
What did your mom and sister say when you told
them you were writing erotic romances – fantasy and historical?
She was surprised when I sprung my first book on her. Mom’s always
been very frank about sex, and as far back as I can remember, when
I asked her something, she told me about it. It was funny and horrifying
at the same time to let her read my first book--UNTAMED. She gave me
flabbergasted looks for days. I don’t think she knew I had it
in me. And I’ve gotten much “worse” since then. LOL
Why are you so drawn toward the fantasy? What is it about this genre that you
like the most?
I think I enjoy the limitless possibilities you have with fantasy...and futuristics
too. Plus, I grew up reading epic fantasy and sword and sorcery adventures as
well as playing Dungeons and Dragons (I’m not a dork! *L*), so it was a
given I’d start off with fantasy.
When a story idea comes to you, do you drop everything and run to your computer
or let it brew in your imagination a bit first? Do you write on your computer
first or make pen and paper notes first?
Emily’s office in THE SEXDROID looks like my house. I write down everything
on whatever is at hand for fear of losing something. There are post-it notes
everywhere, bills, receipts, the list goes on and on. If it can be written on,
I will write my idea on it. My bedroom floor is littered with story ideas, bits
of dialogue, scenes. A man would have to brave the paper front to get me in the
sack.
Do you listen to anything in particular while writing – TV
(Jerry Springer
or CNN?) or Music (Rock or Classical?)
Not usually--wait, does a screaming niece count as metal? I really hate noise
while I’m writing. I can only handle ambient noise, like a room fan running.
Was NCP the first publisher you submitted to? How long was it after submitting
to them did you get a response and was it a favorable response or a better re-work
this a lot and try again?
NCP is the only publisher I’ve ever submitted to--I just knew
they were the one for me. I sent in UNTAMED and heard back from them
around a month or so afterwards--the details are fuzzy now. They were
ecstatic and asking for more and more, and I was certainly happy to
oblige. I couldn’t imagine now writing for anyone else. The NCP
staff is just the best and so supportive about everything.
In researching your history, I realized that all your books have been
published this year, 5 already, with 2-4 more due in the last part
of this year. Did you have these stories already written or are you
just that fast of a writer?
I am just that crazy a writer. I inundated my poor little editor with
proposals, and she got back to me on them with a yes, but only if I
can behave myself.
What anthology is DEMON HUNTRESS a part of? When is this due out?
It’s part of a superhero/superheroine anthology I proposed to
my editor. There’s no scheduled release date, but I think probably
sometime after Christmas in the early part of next year. I am totally
psyched about this anthology. I can’t wait to see it come out.
It is going to kick ass!
Just from the blurb for DEMON HUNTRESS I can
already tell you I’m
dying to read it. Have you decided yet to turn it into a series?
I’m thinking really hard about it. I find Nari a fascinating
character. She kicks ass, is a sarcastic wench, and I do so love a
good action story. The series continuation will probably depend on
how interested the readers are though, to tell you the truth.
Do you prefer writing series? Are they easier
because the “world” already
exists?
In some ways they’re easier, because the world IS built. But
it’s also hard living up to reader expectations. I get really
paranoid about it. I do like revisiting characters, and I think readers
do too.
What are your plans for the future? What upcoming projects do you have?
My personal plans are to contain the spread of my butt from taking
over my writing chair, but that’s going to be a tough one with
all the books I have coming out. If I can keep on the straight and
narrow, for the rest of this year, I still have THE DRAGON KING, SORROWFUL
WANDERER, and FORBIDDEN FRUIT (in the CAPTURED anthology).
SORROWFUL WANDERER is a more serious futuristic romance inspired by
LOTR of all things. THE DRAGON KING is a new book in my Shadowmere
series, and FORBIDDEN FRUIT is a lusty medieval romance.
Early next year, I’ll have a contemporary dragon series (maybe
a series) going on, and probably some more stories about the INTERGLATIC
BAD BOYS as well as a new regency period romance I’m plotting
out with a tentative title of The Greatest Lover in all of England.
That’s a mouthful, so I’m trying to think of something
shorter.
I haven’t yet decided which genre I most love writing in. That’s
me, I just bounce from one thing to another.
The next 2 questions are from a reader:
Where the bloody hell is The Dragon King (which was supposed to be
released in August)???? - LOL
I specifically told my publisher to format their webpage in such a
way that Karen (UK) wouldn't be able to see TDK had come out yet. I'm
glad to see it worked. Mwa ha ha ha ha!
Uh ... well ... that's not true. *sheepish grin* I fell behind. It's
due out the end of this month or the very first week of November if
I keep my booty straight. And not a single person has offered to bribe
me for tidbits. Can you believe it? I must be REALLY mean and scary.
LOL
Is there any indication of a date yet for the start of her Hidden series?
(I love dragons, so am really waiting for this series).
Sometime early next year! I'm dying too. It's going to be so much fun!
Action, sex, dragons and wickedly dark and sexy men. My lips and fingers
are sealed--I don't want to give too much away just yet. I will say
that the hero hasn't been with a woman of his own kind in FOREVER--so
he's workin' on a lot of pent-up desire. The heroine won't know what
hit her. *evil laugh*
I just finished reading INTERGALACTIC BAD BOYS, so I do have a few
little questions then you are done. You can go back to writing me .
. . err . . . I mean your readers more books. :o)
*L* Thank you! I'm workin' on it.
I noticed in INTERGALACTIC BAD BOYS that you use well known names,
places, and species, was there a specific reason behind this?
Hmmm. I didn't think there were that many...unless my subconscious
is working against me. *L* I was having major WB (writer's block) with
THE DRAGON KING, and my editor suggested I try something else, ANYTHING
else to get over it. (I think she was a little desperate LOL) I'd been
thinking about doing a humorous futuristic, spoofing the genre a little,
so I just did it. Being a movie buff, I made the bad boys unintentional
buffs too, and worked in a few details from movies I loved just for
the heck of it. It was really fun having the freedom to do anything
I wanted!
How/where did you come up with the idea behind this book and will it
become a series (please)?
Well, one of the most popular futuristic plotlines is being kidnapped
by aliens. I love that one, but I was not in a mood to tackle anything
serious. Knowing Murphy's Law is always in effect, I thought, what
if they just accidentally kidnapped someone? What if it was a bunch
of guys who habitually got into trouble, and just sort of stumbled
onto Earth? I think aliens could be just like men here, I mean, male
behavior crosses races, why not species too? =)
And will it become a series? Hah! Just you wait. Cole has been pounding
around my brain, demanding her story...and a little well meaning revenge.
I'm not sure how much longer I can resist her.
What sound or noise do you love? What sound or noise do you hate?
I love laughter, and I hate the sound of the alarm clock.
What is your favorite cuss word?
It’s actually a phrase ... and my niece copies it exactly, the
little monster. *L* “God dammit to hell!”
If Heaven exists and God meets you at the Gate what will his first
words be to you?
God, with a pitying look: “I’m sorry, you were supposed
to take the elevator to hell, not the stairway to heaven.”
Me: “What? I climbed all those stairs for nothing?”
