A favorite
gathering place for authors and fans alike is the Ellora’s
Cave yahoo group mailing list. Every day during the week you will find some
of EC’s hottest authors in charge of the never dull and sometimes unruly
group. Your daily list momma will post her presence at the beginning of the
day and then stay around most of the day to offer up stimulating conversation,
probing questions and general all around fun. It is a great time to get to
know your favorite author but it also serves the authors well. Many of them
take advantage of this time with their fans. It’s a way of getting to
know them personally through the magic of the internet and some of the more
interesting topics come from the authors probing questions to the fans. It
is a good opportunity to ask your fans what they want to see. How do you feel
about this subject, would it interest you in a book, is this type of character
stimulating to you or is he a turn off? In exchange it serves the fans well
also as they are frequently rewarded during the day with an excerpt from a
soon to be published book.
Many of the subscribers to this mailing list are authors. But every day one steps forward to be momma for the day. Some of the past list momma’s include Anya Bast, Kit Tunstall, Lora Leigh and Jodi Copeland. Anya asked the group how they felt about kinky love scenes. She got many interesting and diverse answers but generally speaking anything within the EC guidelines was usually desirable. One list member stated, “Anything dealing with animals, children and pure kink does nothing for me. I mean a little feather play, or rubbing oils can be totally arousing. Some light power play like tying your lover to a bed is an aphrodisiac.” Interestingly enough this same person admitted to a fetish for a rubber chicken…hmmmm! Another list member states, “I looooooove BDSM, and can't live without some alpha men, there's just something about being tied down and overloaded with erotic sensation that gives me a happy feel.”
When Lora Leigh paid a visit to the list as momma for the day she asks, “What are your preferred sex toys? And do you enjoy reading about the heroine enjoying her toys in your books?” The answers sparked a day long conversation. “I don't know that I have a preferred sex toy,” said one reader. “I like to read about a wide variety. Outside of buying and using them all myself (hmmm...that's a thought <wink>) it's a great way to learn about them. So...bring 'em on!” But not only did the author learn from the readers the readers learned from the author. Lora, the undisputed queen of sex toys and known for using a wide variety in her books taught the readers a thing or two. She said later in the day, “before I started checking into the sex toys available out there, I thought I was pretty learned.......LOL. I found out different. There are some TOYS out there, let me tell you what right now..........LOL Inflatable dildos. I had no idea. Ejaculating? Who knew? It blew me away.....LOL. Technology is SUCH a good thing.”
Being a list momma is done on a volunteer basis. Many of the authors have full time jobs in addition to their writing or their writing is more than a full time job. That makes it difficult for them to find the time to be on the list. But for one day many of them sacrifice their time for their fans. Giving them friendship, insight into their writings and even a little knowledge to boot. Stay tuned for some interesting conversations.
